What
is Diabetes?
Diabetes
is a condition that results from the body's inability to use blood glucose
(sugar) for energy. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer makes
insulin and therefore blood glucose cannot enter the cells to be used
for energy. In type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas does not make enough
insulin or the body is unable to use insulin correctly.

Why
is insulin so important?
Insulin
is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. It acts like a key that
unlocks cell walls to let blood glucose (sugar) in where it is used
for energy. Without enough insulin, the cell walls remain "locked"
and the blood glucose circulates through the blood causing it to thicken
like syrup. This thickened blood causes the other organs in the body
to work harder to circulate the blood and often results in health complications
like heart disease, diabetic neuropathy (loss of feeling in the hands
or feet), kidney failure and diabetic retinopathy (eye problems).
